At Periscope, Cnaani shows four exhibits: a rug, a screen, a lattice and a series of photographs. All the projects on the show were made in the course of the past year, during a process of home renovation and moving from Tel Aviv to Jaffa. The exhibits are all furniture or home design items, which infuse the domicile sphere with colors, shapes and a multi-layered history of the dynamic Jaffaite one.
The work process was the result of reflections and insights concerning the social, political, communal and visual significance of moving to Jaffa, and the works connect the designed residential environment to the history and to the outer urban spaciousness. Together, all four exhibits assemble s single sphere, which brings together the ruins of Arab Yaffa[MC2] and the new Jaffaite living room, created by a process of Gentrification and by the conquering of the space.
As stated, the show includes four exhibits:
Large Hand knitted Rug made of numerous smaller rugs which had been sewn together.
The rug is made of ropes and ribbons set in circular alignments. With its structures and materials, the rug flickers in an abundance of hues and sparks off an incessant colorful tale.
Fabric-abundant Screen processed with multi-layered netting printing.
The screen combines the geometric qualities of the fabric’s structure, its ready-made impression tier and a pattern based on Islamic geometry, added uniquely and elaborately by Cnaani. The Mediterranean colorfulness, put together with the mixture of the manual and the industrial, generate coincidental and organic combinations.
Airy Lattice braided of metal bars interwoven with textile materials.
The lattice brings together the tangible – matter – with the intangible – air – and by doing so allows what is seen through it to be divided into parts and pieces. The reduction and sorting, with the cutting and the allotting, compel examination and taking a stand.
A Series of Staged Photographs in different formats.
The photographs show tile shards from Palestinian homes ruined by historic and politic processes, gathered by Cnaani at Jabalia beach in Jaffa. Smoothened and rounded by the sea, the shards still call to mind their origin due to their colorful patterns. The shards have been aligned upon an existing tiled floor, in a dialogue discussing the grid, and a repetitive geometric structure, characteristic of a fabric.
The textile blanket, complete with its layers, materials and repetitive patterns, can be soft and flexible, can wrap, embellish and keep warm, but when the need arises, it can also be raised, displayed and rallying.
